Lighting can contribute up to 30% of your power bill. Considerable savings can be made by replacing existing fittings with LED fittings. For example, if you have 12 x 60 watt halogen downlights in your living area by replacing these with the equivalent LED fitting you can reduce the power required to light that space from 720 watts to just 84 watts.
LED
LED does not emit IR or UV radiation making it a safer option for your home.
Due to the elimination of UV, insects are not attracted to the light making LED the perfect solution for outdoor entertainment areas.
There is no "warm up" delay - the light is immediate.
LED emits a light similar to the light achieved through a skylight producing a more natural light helping to alleviate headache and eye strain that can sometimes occur under fluorescent lighting.
LED FLOOD LIGHTS
One 50 watt LED replaces a 200 watt halogen providing a saving of 150 watts per light greatly reducing the running costs of outdoor area lighting. LED flood lights also provide instant light which allows connection to sensor lights.
Your maintenance requirements are also significantly reduced and you can enjoy your outdoor area at night as LED does not attract bugs and insects.
MOTION SENSORS
Motion sensors give you the flexibility to have lights and appliances operating only when required minimising running costs.
They also act as a deterrent when incorporated with security lighting and provide a safe environment for access points.
Motion sensors can also be bypassed if required.
SOLAR LIGHTS
Solar lighting uses the power of the sun to light up internal dark areas. Solar lighting acts like a skylight but without the bugs and heat. Solar lights can also be switched to work on standards mains power on cloudy days or at night to act as a normal light.
The power cable and the fittings attached to it installed in your home are two of the most important aspects of your entire electrical installation. In conjunction with the correct design and circuit protection devices, it is the path way for electricity to flow to each power outlet. It is therefore extremely important that you only use reputable brands supplied by local, well established wholesalers. Green Earth Electrical never install cheap imported products.
Signs that you may need a rewire:
Metal Conduit - installed in homes in the 1940s and 1950s. It can be extremely dangerous if earthing has been compromised. The cotton cables inside the metal conduit deteriorates over time and if your metal pipe isn't earthed correctly it can cause electrocution. In fact, in February 2010 a man near Geelong was electrocuted in a ceiling space as a result of damaged cable. Under no circumstances should you go anywhere near metal conduit.
Black Cable - installed in the 1950s. Its rubber coating perishes over time and can sometimes ooze a green sticky substance. Black cable is not usually earthed.
White Plastic Sheathing- installed in the 1960s and 1970s. This type of cable usually has no earthing.
Other signs that you may have issues with you wiring include lights flickering when turning on other appliances, power dropping out when using too many appliances and other ongoing electrical issues including tripping switches.
Fifty years ago we used less appliances and homes were wired accordingly.
All of these cables run through your walls, under your floor and in the ceiling space of your home so if you have any concerns at all about the safety of your wiring please give us a call and arrange a peace of mind safety inspection.
We can offer full or partial rewires as well as switchboard, mains and metering upgrades.
We are able to arrange all types of underground cabling installations from trenching to hydro trenching and underground boring.
Not sure whether solar is right for you? Unfortunately solar can be an extremely complicated topic to research so we have done all the hard work for you.
We will meet with you, discuss how and when you use your power, analyse your power bills and do a full site assessment to ascertain what size system is appropriate for you. Sometimes solar is not the best solution in which case we can work with you to provide other options to help reduce your power bill.
Green Earth Electrical only use products that have a proven track record from robust manufacturers and suppliers. We only install AC systems which are safer, more efficient, are fully monitored by you and us and come with a full 25 year replacement warranty.
We take care of everything from start to finish, keeping you updated along the way. You then become part of our growing solar family which means we will ensure your system is working as efficiently as possible by regularly monitoring your system free of charge for the life of the system.
We also offer a regular clean and service program. It is important to ensure your entire system is well maintained in order to comply with the Electrical Distribution Code and warranty terms and conditions. Dirty panels will impact on the performance of your system reducing the power of your investment.
Solar is a long term investment and buying a cheap system or one that is not suited to your house may not deliver the savings or performance you anticipated.
If you don't have safety switches, your fuses are blowing or you are wanting to install solar panels you may need a switchboard upgrade.
Old ceramic fuse boards were not designed to cope with the electrical appliances we have in our homes today nor do they provide any safeguards should something go wrong. With a switchboard upgrade each circuit is protected by a safety switch which will shut down power to your home instantly protecting you and your family from fire and electric shock.
Old switchboards are also easily overloaded and you may need an upgrade when purchasing new appliances such as an induction cooktop or installing a spa or solar.
You may also need to consider a switchboard upgrade when undertaking renovations.
With so many people installing oversized solar systems battery storage has become more attractive.
There are many types of battery storage options available, with or without back up protection.
Not all batteries are the same, some come with limited warranties and some require additional components adding further potential failure points.
There are also strict rules around where they can be installed.
Just like solar, if you are considering investing in battery storage, do your research and get the best product you can afford that suits your individual needs. Consider a modular system that can be adapted over time.
We have done all the research for you and only install products we have tested at our own property first. We insist on meeting all the manufacturers personally and will only work with those offering quality products with strong after sales support and warranties.
Green Earth Electrical can analyse the way you use your electricity and provide advice on whether battery storage is viable or whether there are other, more suitable options available to you.
Electric vehicles are the future with car manufacturers no longer investing in research and development on fuel vehicles.
Green Earth Electrical are experienced and fully qualified to install EV chargers.
An EV charger can ensure your vehicle is ready to go when you are, but it isn’t always as simple has just installing the unit on the wall.
EV chargers use a lot of power so you need to ensure the power supply to your property is capable of supplying the additional load.
Each car manufacturer will have its own branded EV charger unit and there are generic models as well. Each comes with its own specific installation requirements.
Depending on the type of car and how you use it you may not even need a Charger, simply plug in to a normal power point and trickle charge.
The less energy you use the more money you save.
Standby Power
According to Sustainability Victoria an average of 10% of your power usage can be contributed to standby power. Standby power is the power that your appliances require to sit in idle mode, such as your television, game consoles, computers, washing machines - basically all those appliances we don't turn off at the wall. To assist in reducing this wasted usage you can install a remote standby eliminator which plugs into the wall socket allowing you to operate each appliance or device by remote.
Monitoring
By installing a monitoring system and becoming aware of your usage it is estimated that you can reduce your power consumption by up to 20%. By entering the price you pay for your power into the device you can see in real time what your home is costing you to run giving you the opportunity to see instant savings when you turn an appliance off. Checking the display before you leave home can let you know that you have left something on.
Energy Efficient Appliances
When replacing appliances it is just as important to consider the star rating system for energy and water usage as it is for style and functionality. The more stars the better!
Heating & Cooling
Consider installing a SolarVenti. SolarVenti is an air collector that reduces humidity in the home and provides for a healthy indoor environment by sending hot and dry ventilation air into the house and pushing stale, moist air out. Your home will be warmer, although it does not replace a heating unit, it does help to reduce your heating costs. A cooling ventilation option is also available supplying cool air into your home from the shady side of the house on a hot day. Best of all, the SolarVenti is completely solar powered meaning no operating costs at all.
